Cultivation Made Sheuly Happier than Before
Sheuly
got married at 14/15 to Bokul from a village named Shalgram. Her husband used to work in a rice mills nearby, which
was not regular during off seasons. In order to increase income he rented a van
and started to pass the life with struggle and hunger. They used to live in a
clay hut having 6-7 tin sheets on top, with no kitchen, toilet, or tube-well. Situation
got worse soon after the birth of two sons. The spouses were helpless and got
accustomed with quarrelling everyday. One day they both planned to cultivate land
mainly to ensure at least a year-round stock of rice at home. Sheuly had to sell
her only pair of gold bangles which she got during marriage and took loan of BDT
5,000/ from DABI as a member group nearby. She then rented one bigha of land (33 decimals) and produced
potato which was fortunately a bumper. This success encouraged them to rent another
piece of land and a power tiller
worth BDT 100,000/ from their profit and loan from DABI and relatives. In
course of time, she bought a cow which gave a calf within a few days too. She started
to sell the milk and made more earning. They bought furniture, chair, TV and
other households. Sheuly made some ornaments from the jewellery for herself
too. Her house is now equipped with kitchen, tube well and better sanitation
system. Their children are now going to school, and helping them as well. They
now employ 254 people to crop with them every year. Gross value of their
acquired asset has now been valued for about BDT 200,000/. DABI along with
other social assistance made Sheuly happier than before.
